How to Choose the Right Table Lamp for Your Space

The right table lamp does more than light a room — it sets the mood, anchors a corner, and quietly defines a space. But with so many options out there, choosing can feel overwhelming. Here's a simple guide to getting it right.

1. Consider the Scale

A lamp that's too small gets lost; one that's too large dominates. As a rule of thumb, the lamp (shade included) should be roughly 1.5 times the height of the surface it sits on. For a bedside table at 60cm, aim for a lamp around 55–65cm tall.

2. Think About the Light You Need

Table lamps fall into two camps: ambient (soft, diffused glow for mood) and task (direct, focused light for reading or working). A translucent shade creates a warm ambient effect; an opaque shade directs light downward for tasks.

3. Match the Material to the Room

Natural and tactile materials — like our bio-sourced PLA — bring warmth and texture to a space. They work particularly well in living rooms and bedrooms where you want a sense of calm and craft.

4. Don't Ignore the Base

The base is the sculpture when the lamp is off. Choose a shape that complements your furniture — organic forms for softer, eclectic spaces; cleaner lines for more minimal rooms.

5. Bulb Temperature Matters

Warm white (2700–3000K) creates a cozy, residential feel. Cool white (4000K+) is better for workspaces. For living rooms and bedrooms, always go warm.

At Coast Fig, all our table lamps are designed with these principles in mind — each one considered, sustainable, and made to last.
